OpenAI acquires Pierre Computer Company

OpenAI has announced that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, which builds developer tools. The company said the deal is intended to expand the code storage and review capabilities of its AI-powered coding tool, Codex. Financial terms were not disclosed. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval.

At the center of the deal is Pierre’s Code Storage service, which allows applications to store source code using Git and track the history of changes made to code. OpenAI plans to bring these capabilities into Codex. Existing customers will be able to continue using Code Storage while integration work continues after the deal closes.

Two open source libraries developed by Pierre are already used in the Codex application. Trees helps developers navigate project files, while Diffs shows which lines of code have changed. Diffs’ edit mode also allows a problematic line identified during review to be fixed on the same screen. OpenAI said Pierre’s projects will remain open source and that it will continue contributing to them.

OpenAI sees the acquisition as part of a broader plan to enable developers and coding agents to work in parallel on the same project. The company also introduced Pando, its source code management infrastructure for engineers and agents, earlier this week. Together with the Pierre team, OpenAI aims to bring the workflow from an agent creating a new Git branch for a code change to deploying code into Codex.
