Acquisition: “OpenAI acquires Glass Imaging”
OpenAI has acquired smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging in a deal worth over $300 million, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The acquisition brings in a company that uses AI-driven neural networks to improve image quality at the moment a photo is taken rather than by post-processing. The move aligns with OpenAI’s apparent push into consumer hardware — the ChatGPT maker is rumored to be working on smartphones, earbuds and other AI companion devices — and follows its 2025 purchase of Jony Ive’s company. OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 and is based in Los Altos, California. The startup was founded by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, who previously led the team that developed Apple’s Portrait Mode. That background directly informs Glass Imaging’s approach to smartphone photography.
Rather than relying on AI to edit photos after capture, Glass Imaging trains neural networks to learn about individual camera systems — including the different cameras on various smartphone models — to yield better images from the moment the shutter clicks. The company had previously raised about $30 million in funding.
The acquisition is expected to bolster OpenAI’s hardware efforts by bringing imaging and camera-system expertise in-house to support products such as the rumored smartphones, earbuds and AI companion devices.
